There are different versions as to the name of this town, depending on the word of the result. If we take “sarta”, could lead to "sartín" (plants that live tangled in thyme and others). Another meaning could be derived from "sartus", weeding. Or cut or chopped mountain, by the small hill that separates them from the heart of the Sierra de San Vicente. At the time of the knighthood domains, Sartajada belonged to the Davilas,
with Navamorcuende as head village, which obtained its independence
in 1678 by the Letter of Village, by the grace of King Felipe IV. |

SANTIAGO APOSTLE CHURCH
(*): From the sixteenth century (1510), Elizabethan style. Three naves
with a five-sided polygonal apse. It separates from from the cenral chapel
by short arches on stone columns. Square-foot tower, made up of three
bodies of low-rise, the last houses the bells. It shows the coat of the
Davilas. The tile base of the apse was sold to the Museum of Santa Cruz
de Toledo. (*) Monument included in the inventory of regional heritage
of the Province of Toledo. |

Due to their lands clay, Sartajada has always had a great tradition of pottery, with many Arabs ovens. From this tradition comes the adjective pucherero or botijero. At present, there is still a family that keeps the artisan crafting. Since most of the mills of the Sierra, the Sartajada were "maquileros”, gaining "maquila "(or portion of ground wheat) by their operations. During the 30s, it came to exceed the figure of 200 inhabitants, while
between the 80s and 90s it suffered a drastic decline in population
that stood close to 100 people, a figure that still remains. It is one
of the municipalities with fewer people and most elderly population
in the mountains. |
