Although the time of founding of Marrupe is unknown, it was named in a 1276 paper given as inheritance in favor of Blasco Ximénez. It existed as a town in 1285, the year in which it passed through a donation to Juan Garcia de Toledo. It is part of the Montesclaros markisate, with a capital in Castillo de Bayuela. Its church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew the Apostle, was annexed to the parish of San Vicente Hinojosa. Regarding the names there are several versions such as "Marrubium"
(marrubio) which is a kind of herbaceous plant with medicinal functions.
Another of the sources could be found in the Arabic word ar-Rubai Mazar
which means "the little mill of Rápita” (Rabida: a
military convent for the defense of the border) which is not surprising,
since this area has been reconquered on several occasions. |
