The name originates from the word fennel (hinojo) derived from the
Latin "genuculum" a crop that was abundant and characteristic
in the municipality.
The name San Vicente came later (according to the historian Carramolino
in the second half of the XVII Century it already featured this name)
and stems from the fact that the Holy Martyrs took refuge in the Cerro
San Vicente fleeing from the Romans.
According to the tradition, Viriato attacked the Roman army from the
Cerro de San Vicente (Mountain of Venus to the Romans).
In the Middle Ages, it was a village that belonged to the Lordship
of El Castil de Bayuela. Its independence was gained due to a letter
naming it a town in 1632, although its church continued depending on
the church of San Andres de Bayuela for another century.

IGLESIA PARROQUIAL DE LA CONCEPCION:
(*) XVI Century, with a style of Gothic-Renaissance transition.
It consists of one single structure that features two chapels in both
sides. The presbytery is polygonal. The structure has masonry walls and
blocks in the corners, tower, sacristy and buttresses. Inside, we can
find valueable sculptures from the XVIII Century as the ones of San Andres
Corsino and Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi, from the Carmelite convent
of Piélago. You can also find the image of Virgen de Los Angeles
o Del Espino, from the Chapel of Our Lady of El Piélago.
VIA CRUCIS: of granite, scattered among the village streets,
it runs from the ancient cemetery of the church to the shrine of San Sebastian.
XIX Century.
SHRINE OF SAN SEBASTIAN:(*) from the XVII Century, on
the road to Cardiel. It features a square structure that is covered with
a wooden framework.
SHRINE OF THE SANTOS MARTIRES: (**). It is located in
the Cerro de San Vicente, on the north side. The shrine was made on the
Cave of the Holy Martyrs, where the legend says, Saints Vincent, Sabina,
and Cristeta took refuge fleeing the Roman emperor Diodeciano.
Southeast of this place, we find the Fountain of Los Santeros, which supplied
water to the hermits.
CONVENT OF LOS CARMELITAS DESCALZOS: It still features
the ruins of two buildings from the XVII Century. It was partially destroyed
in the Carlist wars. It is a masonry building with a great doorway. The
access shows a gate with jambs and lintel decorated with diamond tips.
On the sides, we can find the coat of arms of Philip V and the Order of
the Carmen.
CASTLE: (**) Located in the hills of San Vicente, about
500 m from the cave. Its origin could be Muslim. Later, it was Christian
stronghold. It is believed that later on it was inhabited by the Templars
and the hermits who settled this land. It now retains only two towers
and part of a wall.
The view from here is impressive: the valleys of the Tajo and Alberche,
to the south; the hills of Toledo, La Jara and Campo Arañuelo;
to the west; and the lands of Vera, the Tietar Valley and the Sierra de
Gredos to the northwest and north. It is spectacular.
